On Golden Pond

The Whittier Community Theatre Cast of On Golden Pond
Now Showing at the Center Theatre
"An elderly couple enjoy their latest summer in a cottage on a Maine lake, as they come to terms with the husband's advancing age and his ongoing estrangement from his newly engaged daughter."

So reads the synopsis of the play On Golden Pond, the Whittier Community Theatre's current production. That brief description doesn't really do this play justice.  On Golden Pond is a poignant and witty look at family relationships and the joys and terrors of growing older.

Many of you will remember the film of the same name starring Henry Fonda and his real-life daughter Jane in the roles as father and daughter.

Jane Fonda and her father, Henry
Here are a few of the lines from the film:
Billy Ray: So, I heard you turned 80 today.
Norman: Is that what you heard?
Billy Ray: Yeah. Man, that's really old.
Norman: You should meet my father.
Billy Ray: Your father's still alive?
Norman: No, but you should meet him.
Billy Ray: A canoe! Just like the Indians used.
Norman: Actually, the Indians used a different grade of aluminum.
Norman: "Ethel Thayer." It sounds like I'm lisping, doesn't it?

Henry Fonda and Katharine Hepburn as Norman and Ethel Thayer
Please note: On Golden Pond is for mature audiences.  It contains some vulgar language (which the WCT with their usual sensitivity will have cleaned up a bit for us).  However, it is also compelling and heart-warming when you least expect it.

You will enjoy this production!

The Whittier Community Theatre was founded in 1922 and has the distinction of being the oldest non-profit amateur theatre west of the Mississippi.  The group presents a 4-show season in the Center Theatre, which is located in the Whittier Community Center.
