Vacation in Japan - Fukuoka

Path leading to the Shrine
Well, we've seen a glimpse of Osaka (see post of June 12th), spent a little time in Hiroshima (see posts of July 10th & 11th), and now it's time to move on. My coworker Jon's travels in Japan next led to the city of Fukuoka, where his mother has relatives.  Above we see the colorful path to what I believe is the Hakozaki Shrine Tenjin.

Fukuoka is Japan's 6th largest city.  Newsweek once named Fukuoka as one of the world's "10 Most Dynamic Cities".  This year, another magazine listed Fukuoka as number 12 on its list of the "Top 25 Livable Cities", citing excellent shopping, outstanding food, good transport links, wonderful museums, fresh sea air, and large green spaces.  Also mentioned: it's friendly, safe, clean and close to the rest of east Asia.

Cherry blossoms were in full bloom!
Jon says the above photo was taken of the Cherry Blossoms in the rain. I think he's lucky to have seen them in full bloom. (And rain sounds really good to me at the moment.  But I'm silly that way.)

About 2.5 million people call Fukuoka home.

Visiting with extended family
One of the modern landmarks of Fukuoka is the Fukuoka Tower near the beach in Momochi.  It was built in 1989 as a monument of the Asian Pacific Expo, an event which commemorated the 100th anniversary of the Fukuoka City organization.

The 234 meter-high tower is covered with 8000 mirrors and is the tallest seaside tower in Japan.

Visitors are welcome to drop by for the fantastic view from the observation deck 123 meters up.  I don't think this is a place to visit it you have a fear of heights!

This concludes our mini-tour of the great city of Fukuoka.

Thanks, Jon, for sharing your experience with us!
